SwapMyRigs is a single-cable separation kit for ham mobile and home radios with RJ (“modular”) connections, including but not limited to Icom, Kenwood, and Yaesu. Even for radios with microphone connections only on the control head—Alinco DR-635 and Yaesu FT-7-8XXX, for example—it makes sense to install with SMRs because changing radios later won’t require installing new cables; and you’ll have a built-in speaker connection, too.
Fig. 1 is the way it’s always been: every radio with its own special separation kit. You run separate cables for mic, speaker, and control head.
With SMRs, Fig. 2, one simple cable replaces three regardless of radio make or model.
The same transceiver can be used in different cars, or multiple radios can be swapped in the same car.
In the shack, put the transceiver in the closet near the antenna ports and the controls beside the recliner. Use the same transceiver in the car on those long trips. HF at home and in the car.
All you’ll need is a suitable VGA cable, which is available in our Sales section. Or you might already have one.
